As a trained Perinatal Community Health Worker, you will have the rare and incredible privilege to accompany a woman on the most sacred journey of her life. Mamatoto Village Perinatal Health Worker Program is an example of our philosophy “birth takes a village.” The program creates a three-dimensional exchange between the Perinatal Health Worker gaining professional birth and teaching experience, Mamatoto Village benefiting from the PCHW's support in direct service delivery, and Mamatoto Village families have PCHW's available to support them from pregnancy through the up to twelve weeks postpartum.
How is Mamatoto's training differ from others?
Unlike other birthworker training programs, participants will not only be afforded hours of quality training by experienced maternal health professionals, but also have the opportunity to attend births with experienced PCHWs and receive mentorship for two full years following the completion of the training program. Paid full-time and part-time equivalent opportunities are available to candidates who successfully complete the training [interview required]. We are NOT training you to be doulas, but rather providing you with transferable skills that can be applied to other career pathways.
What does the training cover?
Our rigorous 7-month didactic training program offers the skills required to be an effective Labor and Postpartum Assistant, Perinatal and Childbirth Educator, and Lactation Specialist. Course topics will focus on: the history of women of color's reproductive health; the intersection of health equity and reproductive justice; developing communication skills; charting and documentation, teaching adult learners; uncovering, examining, and healing your own reproductive, self-esteem, and birth-related "issues;" understanding pre-and perinatal psychology as it relates to fetal development and normal newborn behavior; anatomy and physiology; hypnosis, comfort measures, and relaxation techniques; rebozo skills; nutrition for pregnancy and breastfeeding; basic lactation management; perinatal mood disorders and assessment tools; cultural competency and cultural humility; prevention of maternal morbidities; navigating labor challenges; contraception, and fertility awareness; and data capture and tracking. Weekly modules will include role-plays, hands-on skill development, learning activities, lectures, art exercises, videos, and guest speakers.
